When PirateShip was made, I decided to release it under a license similar to the GPL, but I didn't want the program to fragment as it has alreay happened so many times in the FOSS world. Also, it's my wish to keep certain control over the program, such that one day, if necessary, I may sell it (even doing it voluntarily, time is money).
That way, I created my own license, called Ronan License (very creative, isn't it?). This license, to avoid a lot of legalese, was created over the terms of the GPL, with the following conditions:
- The author reserves the right to redistribute this program under any other license as he chooses (including proprietary ones).
- Any derived program must also be released by the terms of this license.
- Future versions of the program may be rereleased in a future version of this license.
- Third parties which make modifications to a program under this license must allow those modifications to be redistributed by the original author under any other licenses as he chooses (including proprietary ones).
- In case the original author of a program under this license decides to release said program under a closed proprietary license, he agrees to release the last version of said program under the GPL version 2.
- Other disputes shall be solved by the terms of the GPL version 2. If that's not enough, the original author shall arbitrate in the matter.
